Getting new dentures is a major life change. Your first month with dentures — what to expect and when in Scottsdale — is a question we hear often at Douglas Family Dentistry. The adjustment period is real, but it is also very manageable. Dr. Paul D. Douglas wants every patient to feel prepared and confident from day one.

Dentures restore your smile and your ability to eat and speak comfortably. However, they do require a transition period. Understanding what is normal can ease your anxiety significantly. Let’s walk through what the first four weeks typically look like for our Scottsdale patients.

Week One: The Most Challenging Days of Your Denture Journey

The first week is usually the hardest. Your mouth is adjusting to a foreign object, and that takes real effort. Soreness, excess saliva, and a strange feeling are all completely normal at this stage.

Your gums may feel tender, especially in pressure points. You might also notice your dentures feel loose or bulky. This does not mean something is wrong. It simply means your mouth muscles are learning something new.

Here is what most patients experience in week one:

  • Increased saliva production as your mouth reacts to the new appliance
  • Soreness or mild irritation along the gum line
  • A feeling that the dentures are too large or too thick
  • Difficulty forming certain sounds when speaking
  • Mild difficulty biting and chewing even soft foods

Do not skip your follow-up appointment after the first week. Dr. Douglas will check for pressure sores and make any necessary adjustments. Early adjustments make the rest of your transition much smoother.
